Jolly Greetings, Helda!
It is mighty cold up here at the North Pole, but your joyful letter warmed me faster than Mrs. Claus’ peppermint hot chocolate with extra marshmallows and her freshly baked Gingerelves cookies.
I was actually extra frozen this morning, because that prankster Jack Frost decided to paint my entire beard in ice while I was sleeping. I’ll confess, it may have been the prettiest my facial hair has ever looked, but I hope he sticks to windows, trees, and rooftops from now on.
We’re in full get-ready-for-Christmas mode here at the workshop. The elves are putting the finishing touches on toys, and while the hours are long, they love knowing their work helps bring joy to children like you. They sing festive tunes all day as they work, which makes the workshop feel extra merry.
While I help out where I can, my main job right now is overseeing the Reindeer Games. It’s an annual event that keeps the talented pullers of my sleigh in top shape and makes sure we can complete our worldwide journey in a single night. It’s mostly about fitness and fun, and at the end, every reindeer earns a giant barrel of carrots and fungi.
Did you know that reindeer love to eat fungi (what most people call mushrooms) during the winter?
Of course, you probably did. I can tell from your letter that you’re a huge animal lover! But what you might not know is that reindeer aren’t the only animals that live here at the workshop.
There’s Blizzard, my 90-pound Bernese Mountain Dog, who believes she is absolutely a lap dog. There’s Kringle, our mischievous grey cat, who strongly prefers Mrs. Claus over me. And then there’s the most surprising resident of all: Jingle the Christmas Giraffe.
That’s right! We have a giraffe living at the North Pole. She loves wearing bright Christmas lights around her long neck, with silver bells jingling all the way down her mane.
You might be wondering how a giraffe, who usually lives in very warm places, ended up in one of the coldest places on Earth.
It happened eight years ago, just after I finished delivering gifts to a village in Kenya. I heard a loud whimper coming from a nearby forest and discovered a baby giraffe tangled in thick vines around a large ficus tree. I freed her, searched for her family, and when no one appeared, I made the difficult decision to bring her along for the rest of my journey.
To be sure she was truly alone, I sent my top-secret agent elves (the same ones who help me keep track of kindness all year long) back to Kenya to investigate. Elves can speak over a thousand languages, including many animal ones. After careful searching and many giraffe conversations, they confirmed her parents had disappeared.
It was sad news, but Jingle now has a warm, joyful home here with us. She especially loves being the tallest animal at the North Pole, even taller than Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster!
Now I’d better get back to preparing the reindeer and helping the elves. I also smell something wonderful coming from the kitchen, though I’ve been warned to stay away from the cookies until Christmas Eve.
